What to Watch for in the PA State Senate in 2019
New members and reelected senators will be sworn in on the first day of session January 1. It’s always an exciting day and I look forward to the promise of what the next two years in our legislative calendar will bring. You might consider watching it live around noon on PCN before your traditional New Year’s Day meal. The Governor and Lieutenant Governor will be inaugurated on January 15, which will also be broadcast and available online.
January 1st marks the beginning of a new two-year legislative cycle when bills that did not pass the House or Senate in the last session must be reintroduced before they can be considered for action. Over the last few weeks, my staff and I have been busy reviewing many co-sponsorship memos of new legislation. So far, I’ve introduced about 10 bills, but others are in the works, too. Based on what I’ve seen and heard, look for discussion and action in the new session on issues like voting reform, Pre-K-12 and higher education, job creation, affordable health care, the child welfare system, climate change, pipeline safety and much more.
I’m hopeful that the bipartisan relationships I’ve built with my senate and house colleagues will be renewed and strengthened, and that together we’ll accomplish important reforms in state and local government. This new year promises to be eventful and I plan on being front and center in representing the needs of my constituents.
I wish you and yours a healthy, happy and prosperous New Year,
Judy
